A move that offered more than the next title.

The situation

This Associate Partner wasn’t actively looking to leave.

They were already on track for promotion to Partner. The question wasn’t whether they could progress, it was what that progression would actually change.

Looking ahead, they struggled to see how their current role would evolve beyond a specialist Tax Partner role. They were open to the right conversation, but only if it offered something genuinely different: more scope, more fulfilment and greater long-term potential.

The task

Gemma worked with the Associate Partner to help them get clear on what an opportunity would need to look like to make a move worthwhile.

It needed to provide:

  • A broader, more fulfilling remit.
  • Greater long-term opportunity.
  • Strong leadership they could believe in.
  • A clear reason to move rather than simply stay on the expected path.

The challenge was for Gemma to represent their experience accurately while bringing their wider commercial and leadership potential to the fore.

The action

Gemma could see a strong alignment between an opportunity and what the Associate Partner wanted from the next stage of their career.

From there, she helped the Associate Partner assess the opportunity in the context of their longer-term career, rather than simply comparing one job with another.

Throughout the process, she:

  • Prepared them for key conversations.
  • Helped them understand the wider expectations at Partner level.
  • Represented their experience to a firm that already trusted her judgement.
  • Encouraged conversations with leaders she believed they would connect with.
  • Provided candid advice through the final negotiations.

That support gave them the context and confidence to assess whether the move could offer more than their existing promotion path.

The results

The new Partner role brought greater responsibility as a regional head of a specialist tax, a broader remit in terms of type and size of clients served and a clearer sense of what their longer term Partnership career could look like.

“It was great from start to finish. Gemma supported me throughout the process, and I know she’ll continue to support me as my career progresses.”
